Site & Sound is a series of events, which examine the border between performance and everyday life. Challenging the distinction between audience and performer, these events are enacted in the semi-public space of stairwell No.29 where members of an unsuspecting public may interrupt them. Each event is conceived as a Spatial Portrait. The artists and invited guests do not perform in the space, but rather perform the space itself by rhythmic and tonal improvisation.
This project is a collaboration with Ellen Wetmore resulting from our common interest in the human experience of acoustic space. The recordings are engineered to capture the unique acoustic characteristics that define this space. Each event is scored. The score is a map, visual evidence of the sonic events that have unfolded within the site during that performance. The structure around which this notation is based is an architectural drawing (section) of the stairwell.
