Killing Ground

Screen shot 2013-08-03 at 11.22.38 PMScreen shot 2013-08-03 at 11.20.51 PMCo-curated by Grady Gerbracht and Rhonda Cooper at the Stony Brook University Art Gallery in January 2005, the exhibition Killing Ground: Photos of the Civil War and the Changing American Landscape presents photographs by the photographer John Huddleston that are published in his book by the same name.  Huddleston presents diptychs consisting of historical photographic documentation from the American Civil War juxtaposed with his own contemporary photographs of the exact same sites and compositions.  Huddleston’s photographic pairings are a thought provoking essay on American history and subsequent developments in the country’s changing socioeconomic landscape and tendency toward suburban sprawl.
