Civic Performance is an exhibition of artist’s projects in a variety of media that operate on or refer to the relationships between individuals and their communities – from humanoid robots and their researchers to refugees, workers, children, immigrants and homeless people. The term civic is to be understood here as anything of or relating to a particular community, social group or culture; and performance in the sense of being an action, conduct, operation or practice.
The exhibition was held in conjunction with the Civic Performance Conference which took place at Stony Brook University in the fall of 2006. The conference brought together academics, community advocates and community leaders to explore complex issues facing the Long Island region including sustainable economies, youth violence and threats to a healthy environment for all citizens.
